Accomodation

  • There are a lot of Resorts on Malapascua Island(about 15-20), mostly managed by Europeans who are married with Filipinas. .

Travel Tips and Finding Us

  • To reach the Philippines there are two principle entry points, Manila and Cebu. We recommend Cebu as it is closer to Malapascua. To reach Cebu Cathy Pacific fly from Hong Kong and Silk Air fly from Singapore. For those who have flights into Manila, an internal flight to Cebu with PAL costs around $50 and takes just over 1 hour. For most nationalities a 21 day tourist visa is automatically given when you enter the country. To stay beyond 21 days you need an extension that can be obtained in Cebu at the department of immigration, located behind Mandaue Fire Department.

From Mactan Airport in Cebu to Malapascua

  • Airport Pickup and Transfer: Some resorts offer transfer for $55 per person one way. One will meet you from your flight in Cebu and bring you to Malapascua. Contact the reorts to make arrangements.
  • Make your own way: Catch a taxi from the airport to Maya, this should cost 1600-3000 pesos for the whole taxi and take two and a half hours. Once in Maya you can arrange a "special trip" that will leave straight away for Malapascua, this should cost 800 pesos and takes 20 minutes, plan to be in Maya before 4.00 pm.
  • For the budget traveler: The cheapest route is to take a Taxi from the airport to the Northern Bus Terminal (180 pesos), then catch a Bus to Maya. The best bus to catch is the CERES LINER (136 pesos) this takes three - four hours. From Maya a public boat to Malapascua (40 pesos) takes 20-30 minutes, it is best to be in Maya before 4.00 pm.

Budgeting and Money

  • The currency of the Philippines is Pesos(PISO) PHP, currently the rate hovers around 45 pesos to one US dollar or 62 PHP for one Euro. Malapascua has no money changers, but some resorts are changing, so best to stock up on Pesos in Cebu. The easiest way to do this is with a bank card (Cirrus, Maestro, Master card or Visa) through an ATM, we recommend BPI, PCI Equitable or HSBC banks in Cebu. Most Resorts will accept payment in US dollar cash, US dollar TC and Pesos. Accommodation on malapascua ranges from $5 to $30 a day depending on the time of year and accommodation style. Budget about $10 a day for food, beers costs half a dollar or 30 pence each.

Health / Medical

  • The food on the island is mainly from western run restaurants, hygiene is good. Tap water is not suitable for drinking, bottled drinking water is widely available on the island. Typically food hygiene and medical facilities in the Philippines are good by SE Asian standards, hospitals in Cebu are full of US trained doctors and have the latest equipment, including recompression chambers (2.5 hours from Malapascua). Outside the main cities, hospitals can be a little basic. Malapascua is not a malaria area.

Getting there to Malapascua:

1.1) Bus

You can get there with buses like “Cebu Autobus”, “Ceres Liner” or “Ceres Tours” from Cebu to Maya . Fare is PHP 136.00 Cebu > Maya per person.

“Ceres Tours, “Air-Con” and other buses leave from Cebu City´s Northern bus terminal for Maya at 5 and 6 am (Peso 136.00, Aircon additional price; 3 1/2 to 4 hours). 1.2) Taxi

If you want to, you can take a taxi from Cebu to Maya , for about P3000. May be its more relaxing than riding a bus with 3-4 hours sitting in those awfull small seats with no space for your feet.

Malapascua, The name means "Unfortunate Christmas" but time spent on the Philippines' tiny Malapascua Island is anything but an ill-fated holiday. Shimmering aqua-blue waters greet visitors as they land from bancas (outrigger boats) onto the white sands of Bounty Beach, on the island's south side. A few small inns on the beach offer comfortable bungalows and simple meals--rates are about $30 a night for a private bungalow and meals for two. Room service, television and air conditioners are in short supply, but there are ample opportunities for lazy mornings on the beach and postcard-perfect sunsets. Visitors wishing to sample the local culture can stroll around Malapascua and visit its small fishing communities in just a few hours--the island covers less than 4 sq km.Malapascua is located only 8 km off the north coast of Cebu, in the Philippine Visayas. However, it is remote enough to avoid throngs of package-holiday tourists. Visitors must endure a dusty, bumpy three-hour bus ride from Cebu City to Maya, followed by a 45-minute banca trip.

1.3) Boat:  Starting at 8:30 h daily (Filipino time!) in the morning, every 30 minutes (look at the schedule at the cashiers cabin) bankas leave Maya for Malapascua  if at least 10 passengers are available . If not one has to wait one ore more hours, or pay PHP 800-1000 for a “special ride”. The boats go directly to Bounty Beach (PHP 50; 30 minutes)

Getting to Malapascua 1

The trip from Cebu City to Daanbantayan/ Maya  (the jump-off point), would normally take between 4 to 4.5 hours by bus. A 4-hour trip, it is long enough for a supposedly leisurely travel so you should take the airconditioned bus, Ceres Tours, to relax a bit while in transit. CERES LINER is the one without Aircon. Maya is some 145 kilometers away from the city via narrow and winding road passing through scenic landscapes along the way.

During the bus ride one will pass Mandaue City and Consolacion

The bus ride is far from smooth over a winding and narrow road all the way to Bogo, a progressive city. The bus will reach Bogo  about 2,5 - 3 hours later and then after a 15 minute stop for unloading passengers will go to the last leg of the journey. The towns of Medellin and Daan Bantayan are located in a peninsula Daanbantayan, connected to Bogo only by a narrow isthmus. The bus had to slow down as we entered the peninsular towns as the road was surprisingly unpaved

About 4-4,5 hours after leaving one will reach Maya wharf pantalan and then continue  the  journey to the island, this time by boat. Malapascua Island is a 30-minute boatride across a shallow 8-kilometer channel from Maya.

    Getting to Malapascua 1.

Getting to Malapascua Island 2.

First you have to get to Cebu. Then hail a cab to take you to the Northern Bus Terminal. Look for the bus marked "Maya Bagay". This could be an Cebu-Autobus or CERES Liner. There is a bus leaving for Maya starting at 4AM, every hour until 4 PM. But we advise leaving early in the morning to avoid traffic and to enjoy a cooler weather.

Maya is your destination. Bus fare is P 136.00 per person. It is the last stop, the northernmost town of mainland Cebu. The trip takes between three to four hours. There are usually two stops during which you can use the public bathroom or stretch your legs.

As the trip goes farther up north, you will realize that the bus seems to be the main transport on the main road. It will stop countless times along the way to pick up and drop off passengers from one town to the next. And yes, you just might get the chance to share a ride with a boxful of chickens.

You will literally get off by the seaside. Here you will most likely be approached by boatmen offering to take you to the island or asking if you already had arrangements. We recommend having arrangements with your resort so they will send someone to meet you as soon as you get off the bus. Otherwise, make sure that you have made clear arrangements with the boatmen regarding the fees. Unless you are in a hurry, which we assume is quite unlikely on a vacation, take the boat trip with other passengers on board rather than a special trip. A special trip will cost as much as P800-P1000, which is the normal rate. If you ride with other passengers, the fee is P 50 per person, but the boats are waiting until at least 10 passengers on Board. This could last hours!!!

When the tide is especially low, you will be put in little rowboats to take you to the motorboats. Don't forget to pay the boatman --- that is additional P10 per person and P10 per luggage piece.

The boat ride to Malapascua Island takes an half to one hour. You will not anymore be dropped off on Bounty Beach which is the main beach area, since June 2008 the Arrival is in Bario LOGON on the westside of Malapascua. It can happen that there is at arrival in Malapascua LOW TIDE, so the Pumpboat has to anchor about 70 meter outsideand you have again to use a little rowboat, to get to the Island ( also again P 10 additional fare). If you are booked with  Beach Resort and you have taken their boat, they will drop you off right in front of the resort.
